Controlling organism, Understanding life

Q What was your motivation for joining the program, and what about the program appeals to you?

My motivation for studies, which is sometimes explained in a little weird terms because of my mad love for organisms, often builds mental and lofty walls between me and the others. On the other hand, all in HWIP including students can investigate not only the meaningless surface but also the theory and personality, and can develop discussions without retardation. Participating in HWIP gives us chances to talk and enjoy various events in such great environment.

Q What is your expertise and who do you want to develop it with the program?

I have studied methods to change the system in Escherichia coli since I was a bachelor student. These are methods where we can change and control the state of organisms. My technique can be applied to very simple things like E. coli, but more complex structures like human. By grasping the knowledge in the other realm and learning ways to understand what living things is, I would like to control, create and mimic them. In addition, development of applications out of my research is also very interesting.

Q What are your future dreams and goals?

I want to well answer some difficult questions. What are “living” and “death”? How are they formed? Why cannot we avoid death? Finally, I want to gain immortality. Thinking these matters, I would like to create common tools which we have made from inorganic stuff based on organisms or similar.
